‘Nite of the Living Will’ at UH Law Library Oct. 26 Offers End of Life Care Planning Info

October 13, 2016

On October 26, as part of its commitment to serving elders, the UH Law School’s Elder Law Program will once again offer the very popular “Nite of the Living Will” just a few days before Halloween.

The free program, entitled “Deciding What If? and Trying to Remember??” will start at 1:30 p.m. in the Law School Library at 2525 Dole St. and will focus on decision-making about end of life medical treatment and advance care planning. The program is particularly aimed at kupuna, family caregivers, and service providers, but all are welcome.

“This will help you communicate your wishes for end of life care,” said Prof. James Pietsch, Director of the UH Elder Law Program (UHELP) at the William S. Richardson School of Law.

“Discussion will include informed consent/informed refusal, individual instructions for health care, durable powers of attorney for health care, comfort care only and DNR bracelets/necklaces and Provider Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST),” Pietsch explained.

Also available that afternoon is the new 25th Anniversary Edition of a handbook produced by UHELP. The latest edition – “Deciding What’s Next and Trying to Remember” - is a legal handbook for Hawai‘i’s older persons, families and caregivers.

The handbook is published as a partnership between UHELP and the City and County of Honolulu Elderly Affairs Division, with funding from the U.S. Administration on Aging. It was written and compiled by Prof. Pietsch and UHELP Administrator Lenora Lee. The handbooks are also now available at the UH Law School front desk at 2515 Dole St.

At the Oct. 26 event, attendees may also pick up a Kokua Packet that offers assistance in Trying to Remember.

Refreshments will be served. To save a seat, please call (808) 956-6544 or email: uhelp.edu@gmail.com. Faculty and students are welcome.

Parking is available for $5 in the quarry parking structure.
