Jerome A. Cohen, professor at NYU School of Law since 1990 and co-director of its U.S.-Asia Law Institute, is the senior American expert on Chinese law and government, and the author of numerous articles and books on Chinese law. Prof. Cohen began studying China’s legal system in 1960 as a faculty member at the University of California (Berkeley). In 1964, he founded East Asian Legal Studies at Harvard Law School, where he taught full-time for fifteen years, and part-time for another decade. He also pioneered international law practice relating to contemporary China when he opened a law office in Beijing in 1979.  Prof. Cohen is Adjunct Senior Fellow for Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations, and a director of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.
