Mateo Caballero

Mateo Caballero is the principal attorney of Caballero Law LLLC, where he practices in the areas of civil rights and liberties, workers’ rights, and general legal services for non-profits, social enterprises, and startups. Before starting his own practice, Mateo was the Legal Director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaiʻi, where he managed their impact litigation docket on a wide range of civil rights and liberties issues, including free speech, disability rights, privacy and technology, due process, and equal protection. At the ACLU, he defended and advanced the civil rights and liberties of everyone in Hawaiʻi, but particularly of those most marginalized by the legal system and society.

Mateo also worked in private practice both here in Hawaiʻi and at the nationally recognized law firm of Covington and Burling. In 2008, he also clerked for Judge Elizabeth S. Stong at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Eastern District in New York in Brooklyn. Mateo earned a juris doctor degree cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2007 and a bachelor in science degree summa cum laude from Washington and Lee University in 2004.
