Biography

Matthew Stubenberg graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2009, andgraduated cum laude from Maryland Law School in 2013. Interested in using technology to change howthe law is practiced, he developed the Not Guilty App, which provided an interactive directory of Courtresources and Judges in Maryland. Afterwards, Matthew realized there was an opportunity to automatethe criminal record expungement process in Maryland and developed MDExpungement.com which hasbeen used to expunge more than 100,000 cases since launching in 2015. Matthew has worked in a number of access to justice legal tech roles including the Sr. ApplicationSpecialist for the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau and later as the IT Director/Staff Attorney for the MarylandVolunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS). During his position at MVLS he created the CLUE program whichscraped and housed millions of court records for easy access by researchers and advocates. His mostrecent position was the associate director of legal technology for Harvard Law School’s Access to JusticeLab where he conducted randomized controlled trials on various legal interventions to determine theireffectiveness. Matthew has won several awards including the ABA Top 40 Young Lawyers, Daily Record’s 20 in their20’s, and the Maryland Bar Foundation’s award for The Advancement of Rights of the Disadvantaged.His work has also been featured in the New York Times, ABA Journal, Daily Record, Open Law Lab, andTechnical.ly.
