Calvin G.C. Pang '85

Professor Pang joined the law faculty in 1994. He previously worked at the Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i where he managed the Waiʻanae branch office before moving to the main office in Honolulu where he worked on public entitlements and family law issues. He also spent a year at the Poverty Law Center in Orange County, California. Just prior to joining the faculty, he was a staff attorney at the Law School's Elder Law Program.

He has been recognized for his service to the community, having received the Robert W. Clopton Award from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, the Dean’s WSRSL Alumni Association Public Service Award, and the “Outstanding Pick” Award from the Advocates for Public Interest Law.  He is also a past recipient of the law school’s Outstanding Teacher Award.

Professor Pang has chaired the boards of several local organizations including the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi, Catholic Charities Elderly Services, Hawaiʻi Chapter of the Children’s Justice Centers, and the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Oahu.  He has also chaired three sections of the Association of American Law Schools:  Clinical Legal Education, Aging and the Law, and Balance in Legal Education.  He continues to serve on the Hawai‘i Supreme Court Committees on Court Interpreters and Language Access, and on Equality and Access to the Courts, as well as on the Access to Justice Commission’s Committee on Barriers to Access to Justice.  A former board member of the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, Professor Pang remains on the Disciplinary Counsel’s Hearings Committee.  

A retired Peace Corps volunteer, Professor Pang teaches courses that concern the family and its members.  He continues his work on articles concerning the history of child protection during the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, the legal and socio-cultural contexts of films by Kore-eda Hirokazu on child mistreatment, and the changing landscape of family law decisions by the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court.
