Liam Skilling '07

Liam Skilling has directed the Evening, Part-Time Program and the Academic Success Program since 2010. His primary areas of interest and scholarship include education law and policy, civic education, child welfare law, and law school pedagogy and curriculum reform. Director Skilling regularly teaches Equitable Remedies, Interdisciplinary Child Welfare Clinic, and first year and upper division courses in the Legal Writing program. In collaboration with the Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law, he teaches a LSAT Preparation course for prospective students. He is the recipient of the Dean’s Medal for Outstanding Service to the Law School (2008) and the Soifer Award for Social Justice (2014).

 

Director Skilling spearheads the Law School’s civic education efforts in the community. In 2015, he founded the Richardson Law & Justice Summer Program, a summer immersion program for public high school students interested in law, justice, and legally-related careers. He is the principal investigator on the First Amendment Project and the faculty advisor for Students for Public Outreach and Civic Education. Director Skilling also serves on HSBA Civic Education Committee, the Board of Directors of the Hawaiʻi Media Council, the Senior Advisory Group of the Hawaiʻi Educational Policy Center, and he is the former Chair of the AALS section on Part-Time Division Programs.

 

After graduation from Richardson in 2007, Director Skilling clerked for Magistrate Barry M. Kurren of the United States District Court, District of Hawaiʻi. Prior to law school, he spent several years teaching in k-12 education in New York, California, and Hawaiʻi. He served as a Teach For America corps member in East Palo Alto from 1996-1998.

 

Director Skilling is originally from Hell’s Kitchen, New York. He is a former KTUH DJ, and he was the 2012 Hawaiʻi Poetry Slam Champion. He is the proud father of two amazing, talented daughters.
