U.S. cases and legal theory emphasizing law in the social construction of racial categories, shifts in race-based anti-discrimination law, and the interaction of culture and law in judicial decision-making.

Notes

Race, Culture, and Law will examine the complex interrelationships between the legal system and structural inequalities. Students will learn the principles of critical race theory and apply them to traditional law school subjects, including contracts, property, torts, civil procedure, criminal law, and criminal procedure, as well as other facets of the law and society. Learning tools will include film screenings, debates, and guest lecturers.
