UH Mānoa Catalog Description
Study of contemporary topics in environmental law to change periodically as to issues and topics. (B) advanced environmental law; (C) regulatory; (D) legislature; (E) policy; (F) judicial. Repeatable six times.
Notes
This workshop will focus on International Environmental Law in the context of Hawaii and the Pacific, with hands-on opportunities for students to engage actively in the critical "soft law" process on issues ranging from biodiversity to climate change. Students will help the Environmental Law Program (ELP) participate as an Official Member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in preparation for the September 2016 World Conservation Congress (WCC) in Hawaii.
Projects will include: (a) researching the IUCN Congress process, particularly motions procedure, (b) collaborating with other IUCN members on preparing, submitting, and reviewing motions, (c) educating IUCN members and other conservation organizations in Hawaii on how to participate in the Congress. The work products expected will likely include four projects: (a) background white paper on the IUCN history and programs in a specific subject area, (b) analysis of potential motion topics related to Hawaii and Pacific in that subject area; (c) preparation of draft and final motions for submission in February 2016; (d) review of motions submitted by IUCN members in the on-line vetting process in March - May 2016. For the 2d credit option, students will produce a draft report and/or law review article on the results of the Workshop and ELP's participation in the Congress for submission as law review article (post-Congress).
Students in this Workshop will be encouraged to continue to collaborate with ELP through the Summer and Fall, when the Congress takes place in Hawaii. Due to the February deadline for motions submissions, student in this Workshop will begin to meet with the instructor in person or by email/phone before the semester begins, starting in December 2015 and over Winter Break.
