Lawyering Fundamentals II

Law School Description

Formerly known as Legal Practice II. Updated to Lawyering Fundamentals II in Fall 2015.

UH Mānoa Catalog Description

A comprehensive program that teaches students the analytical and presentational skills necessary for excellent legal writing. This course introduces skills and strategies for preparing written legal arguments and oral advocacy. Repeatable up to 3 credits. Pre: 504.

Notes

Students will undertake writing assignments and practical skills training in the context of a simulated, semester-long problem. They will focus on several lawyering skills, including interviewing and counseling, negotiation, mediation, and oral advocacy. The class will be divided in half, with each half representing one of the two parties in the problem. The written assignments will involve addressing different audiences – the client, the opposing party and counsel, the judge, and the attorney’s supervisor – requiring students to consider the different purposes, strategies, and rhetoric needed to write an effective legal document. Writing assignments may include letters to various parties, an intraoffice memo, discovery documents, a brief, and a settlement agreement. Classes may also cover such topics as addressing bias and cultural differences, ethical issues, and law office management. The LF II Clinic carries the same number of credit hours as the other LF II sections and fulfills the LF II requirement for graduation. The LF II Clinic will meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30 - 4:30 pm, during the same slot as the LF II sections. Like LF II, this clinic will be graded and will not have a Credit/No Credit option.
