Richardson Opportunity Grants

Our biggest source of financial aid is need-based funding in the form of Richardson Opportunity Grants. Richardson Opportunity Grants may be available to students who demonstrate financial need based on information provided on their FAFSA (School Code 001610). The maximum annual UHM award for law students is $4,000. Students must be enrolled at least half-time to receive the Richardson Opportunity Grant. Funding is limited and as a result we encourage you to file your FAFSA as soon as possible during each year you will be enrolled.

Internal Scholarships

The Law School has a very limited merit scholarship budget. The largest merit scholarship award for an entering JD student is $5,000 per year.  Prospective JD students do not need to complete a separate scholarship application for merit scholarships.  International JD students are not eligible for merit scholarship awards.  JD scholarship recipients will be notified by the Admissions Office when they are admitted.  All entering JD merit scholarships require that students maintain a minimum GPA of 2.2. This requirement is outlined in the scholarship award email.

  • Admitted JD students may direct questions about merit scholarship awards to the Office of Admissions at (808) 956-3479 or lawadm@hawaii.edu.
  • Admitted AJD students may direct questions about merit scholarship awards to the Office of Admissions at (808) 956-3479 or lawadm@hawaii.edu.
  • Admitted LLM students may direct questions about merit scholarship awards to Spencer Kimura at kimurasp@hawaii.edu.
  • Admitted SJD students may direct questions about merit scholarship awards to Professor Tae-Ung Baik at tubaik@hawaii.edu.
Current students may apply for a small selection of internal scholarships online via the UH Student Scholarships

External Scholarships

Both prospective and current students may explore links to external scholarships. Eligibility for these scholarships may be based on financial need, academic achievement, and extracurricular activities.

Attention:  Financial Aid Recipients

Scholarships, tuition waivers, and stipends are considered part of your financial aid package. Federal regulations require that Financial Aid Services take these resources into account when determining your eligibility for financial aid awards.  Your financial aid (grants, work-study, loans) and resources may not exceed the cost of attendance (tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, etc.).

If you receive a scholarship, tuition waiver, or stipend, you must complete the Financial Aid Change Request Form at http://www.hawaii.edu/fas/forms/. If Financial Aid determines that they must revise your financial aid award, they will email you and the revision will be reflected on the MyUH portal.

For more information about how scholarships may affect your financial aid, please see http://www.hawaii.edu/fas/policies/other_finaid.php#other_res.
