Auditing Policy for Non-Law Students

The William S. Richardson School of Law accepts only two types of external auditors: (1) Classified UH Graduate Students; and (2) Professional Auditors.

Classified UH Graduate Students

Classified UH Graduate students are graduate students with “classified” status enrolled at the University of Hawai’i who are seeking to take law courses that are applicable towards a graduate degree in another UH department or college, e.g., College of Education. To receive approval to audit a Law School course, a Classified UH Graduate Student must complete the following steps by the end of the first week of Law School classes:

  1. Fill out the Classified UH Graduate Student Application Form on the Law School web site, which will be routed to the Law School Registrar;
  2. Obtain written permission and acknowledgement from the student’s department chair or graduate advisor stating that the credits will be applied towards the graduate degree;
  3. Request the department chair/graduate advisor to submit to the Law School Registrar the written approval by email to lawreg@hawaii.edu; and
  4. Await confirmation of approval to audit from the Law School Registrar before attending the first class.

Professional Auditors

A Professional Auditor is someone who is not enrolled at the Law School and not a Classified UH Graduate Student but seeks to audit a law course to advance their professional career (e.g., attorney, accountant, educator). Those professionals who wish to audit a Law School course will be expected to have a graduate degree or equivalent experience prior to auditing a Law School course.

Professional Auditors may audit courses at the Law School only with permission of the Law Professor or lecturer teaching the course and Law School Administration and after paying the required tuition. Professional Auditors pay tuition by credit hour; resident and non-resident status is applicable to the tuition rate. Professional Auditors will have their audit credit recorded on an official UH transcript but will not be considered Law School students for any purpose and not accorded Law School privileges except for those already offered to the general public.

To receive approval to audit a Law School course, the Professional Auditor should initiate the application process at least two (2) weeks prior to commencement of classes and must complete the following steps by the end of the first week of Law School classes:

  1. Fill out the form on the Professional Auditors Application Form Law School website, which will be routed to the Law School Registrar;
  2. Await confirmation of approval to audit from the Law School Registrar before attending the first class; and
  3. Pay the appropriate tuition (per credit, resident or non-resident) to the University and submit proof of payment to the Law School Registrar at lawreg@hawaii.edu.
Please note that Law students have priority to seats in Law School courses. Law School courses with limited enrollment or those that are offered as a seminar may not be available to audit.

Na Kupuna Progam

Because the Law School is a professional school, we do not participate in the Na Kupuna program. Persons otherwise eligible for the Na Kupuna who seek to audit Law School courses may submit an application through the Professional Auditors program and must pay the required per-credit tuition.
