J-Term: 1/9 (M); 1/10 (T); 1/11 (W); 1/12 (Th); & 1/13 (F) This course will examine the nomination and confirmation process and focus on a range of issues that arise from that process, including criteria used to evaluate nominees, the scope of inquiry into a nominee’s views, confirmation strategy, the role of the media, and questions raised about law and jurisprudence in the confirmation process (e.g. what effect should diversity and personal experiences play a role in judging). This course will be taught by U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of the Northern District of California with participation from Professor Eric Yamamoto and civil rights attorney Dale Minami (lead counsel in the Korematsu coram nobis case, and active in the judicial screening and selection process).
