Notes

This course will explore cases, statutes, and theories shaping the law’s relationship to sexual orientation and gender identity. Part constitutional law, part queer theory, and part legislative advocacy, this course will draw connections between law, policy, social conventions, and their impact on LGBTQ+ persons’ lives. We will examine diverse avenues for effecting social change – such as community organizing, litigation, and legislative advocacy – and strategize how to best solve real-world problems facing the LGBTQ+ community. Students will be expected to weigh in on pending legislation, which may include testifying orally or in writing before the Hawaii State Legislature and/or city/county councils.
