This seminar is comprised by a comparative study of the historical and constitutional development of the various United States territories acquired since 1898. These include Hawaiʻi, Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines, Guantanamo Bay, Panama Canal Zone, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, among others. As part of the study, the applicable case-law of the U.S. Supreme Court will be discussed, as well as that of other federal courts. Additionally, those federal executive and congressional actions which affect each jurisdiction will be discussed, as well the acts that each jurisdiction has employed in order to improve its political status and relationship with the United States.
