Death Spirals, Duck Curves, and Distributed Dreams: Public Utilities Law in Hawaii

Law School Description

Introduction to ERISA Law

The protections afforded by ERISA, or the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, to participants and beneficiaries of employer-sponsored pension and health and welfare plans affect most working individuals. This is largely due to ERISA's nondiscrimination requirements and corresponding Internal Revenue Code provisions. This course will provide an introductory framework for understanding the origins, purposes, and operation of ERISA.

Notes

Public utilities regulation is a little known area of the law that has an outsized impact on the world. Energy is a primary driver of human prosperity, but its production and use cause immense threats to life on earth. This course will cover how public utilities came to exist, why and how they are regulated, who can influence their behavior, and why it all matters. With a focus on electricity, a little bit of economics, little bit of science, and a bit more law and policy, students will learn the basics of what goes on at public utilities commissions, who are the players involved, and some of the particular challenges and opportunities here in Hawaii.
